![]() Complicating the new setup is the fact that what should be the power button actually launches Bixby. ![]() We've already talked about how Samsung's decision to move the power button is jarring when you first start using the Note 10. Not sure why you would want to talk to Bixby, but for those who do, you can use it to turn off or restart your phone. If you place your finger on the fingerprint sensor on the always-on display, your phone will simply unlock. I've found this shortcut only works when used from the lock screen. After a second or so, the app icon's will show up drag your finger to whichever app you want to open and lift up. If you opt for the floating button setting, you only need to place your finger on the sensor and leave it there. Just below the layout section, you'll find the option to change the left and right shortcut.įor those who want something a little different. Open Settings > Lock screen > App shortcuts and select Floating button if you'd rather have the app icons show up next to the fingerprint sensor when you long-press on it. Not only can you change which apps are available, but you can even change where the shortcuts are displayed. By default, those apps are the camera and phone apps. The lock screen has two app icons that act as shortcuts to open said apps. If you go to Settings > Lock screen > Always-on display to set a schedule, show at all times, or leave it on tap to show.Ĭombine having AOD on at all times with lift to wake turned on and your phone will always be at the ready.Īn always-on display should always be on, right?Ī different way to access lock screen shortcuts You actually have to tap the screen to use it. Out of the box, the Note 10's always-on display (AOD) feature isn't, well, always on. Raise to wake - also called lift to wake - is a subtle, but useful feature. Going forward, whenever you pick up your phone, the screen will wake and you'll see your pending notifications right away. Open the Settings app and go to Advanced features > Motions and gestures and turn on Lift to wake. Use the Note 10's Lift to wake feature to have your phone always at the ready whenever you pick it up. That’s probably why Samsung promptly dropped the idea and never tried it again.Pushing a button to wake up your phone's screen isn't exactly a laborious task, but it's one that's unnecessary. According to the instructions for using this feature, measuring the temperature required you to leave the device to cool off from any heat it might have accumulated during use and leave it somewhere so it doesn’t get warm from your hands.Īs you might imagine, it’s far from practical and even after following the instructions, the accuracy of the measurements was doubtful. Samsung did it with the Galaxy S4 and Note 3. Namely, Samsung and Motorola had phones with thermometers. The idea is nothing new and manufacturers in their constant pursuit of innovation did give it a try. Still, “closer” is not exactly good enough, it’s basically another word for “best guess”, and if that’s all the phone will provide, you might as well guess yourself. Using the data from the internal sensors and clever algorithms, you can end up with a number that is closer to the real ambient temperature than if you were solely relying on the thermometer. There are ways to mitigate the influence of the device’s own temperature. Essentially, manufacturers would have to put a thermometer on a radiator and still provide measurements that make sense for the user. But these same parts are generally used to dump heat from the internal components, or in other words, as a basic passive radiator. ![]()
